The painting shows the half-length figure of a bearded man in three-quarter profile before a blue background. He wears a fur-trimmed 'Schaube' (a loose, wide-sleeved mantle) over a black doublet with embroidery and gemstone knops. The banded collar of a finely pleated white shirt encircles his neck. A slanted beret

A slanted beret flaunting feathers covers his head; from beneath it a lock of his hair peeks out, already grey in contrast to his red beard. His gold necklace with a medallion and the wide ring with a blue stone gracing the index finger of his left hand are to be understood as pointers to the social status asserted by the sitter.
