The painting depicts a seated half-length figure of Christ as the Man of Sorrows wearing a crown of thorns. His body is turned slightly to his left and his head is tilted to his right. He holds the implements of his martyrdom in his hands: three rods and two whips.

He holds the implements of his martyrdom in his hands: three rods and two whips. There is a bloody wound in his side, stigmata on his hands and streams of blood run down his limbs and chest.
