This panel is the left outer wing of an altarpiece formerly in the castle church in Wittenberg. Stylistic differences in the representation of the figures indicate that the panels of the altarpiece were produced by different artists. The central panel and inner wing panels were executed by two different artists from the Netherlands. This panel was executed by a third artist and shows a rather static full-length figure of St Barbara against a neutral background, holding a chalice with a host and wearing a crown.

Research History / Discussion

The altarpiece consists of a central panel with two moveable wings and was formerly located in the Schlosskirche (castle church) in Wittenberg. Stylistic differences suggest that three different artists contributed to the work. Both the central panel and the inner sides of the wing panels bear the hallmark of Netherlandish artists active c. 1500. The central panel depicting a nocturnal scene of the taking of Christ, was completed first and the wing panels (inner sides) with angels bearing the Arma Christi were then added. Although they are evidently by another artist, being unlike the central panel in execution, their composition was designed to complement it. The exteriors of both wing panels are of a later date and have been attributed to the Cranach workshop in Wittenberg. During its documented history the various component parts of the altarpiece were separated in the 18th century but have since been reunited. For a more detailed discussion of the altarpiece and its chronology see [Neidhardt 2006]
