When the panel was sold at Kunsthaus Carola van Ham, Cologne, Auction 65 (1975), no. 1467 it was dated '1543':

'Portrait of Erasmus of Rotterdam. Half figure in three-quarter profile to the left. Dated above the back 1543 [?]. (dated top right: 1543; Oil on panel, 19 x 15.2 cm)'. The date may have been adjusted from '1533' to '1543' after the panel disappeared from Gotha.
