Since the late gothic period this pictorial type of bust portrait with hands has been favoured, however here the sitter has been set very tightly within the pictorial space. The position of the right hand suggests that the young man once held a flower or a ring between his thumb and index finger. The number 22 beneath the delicately written insignia is probably the age of the sitter. It has been attempted to identify him as Dr. Hieronymus Schurpf (Schaich-Klose), a lawyer from Wittenberg. More recently Konrad von Rabenau convincingly suggested physiognomic similarities with the later portrait of Caspar von Köckritz (Paris, Louvre).
