Provenance

This is a fragment from the canvas paintings that originally decorated a coffered ceiling in the living quarters of Elector Friedrich III in Colditz castle. The paintings of biblical scenes on canvas were fitted about 1525. The scenes were cut out in the 18th century and are now lost but the painted decorative elements that were fixed beneath the frame members have in part survived. [Exhib. Cat. Düsseldorf 2017, no. 162]

Support

- sized canvas

Ground and Imprimatura

- unprimed canvas

Paint Layers and Gilding

- water-based paint, so called 'tüchlein': thin paint application defining the shapes of flowers, fruit and foliage; modulated in places with a further paint application; subsequently contours were drawn in black while highlights were achieved with white paint

- two different qualities of azurite and malachite were used

- the original colour intensity has been preserved because the paint surface was protected from direct light for many centuries

- unvarnished
