Christian salvation, which was fulfilled through Christ's redeeming death and resurrection makes recourse to the original sin commited by the first couple and mankind's need to be redeemed. Adam takes the apple offerd to him by Eve. God the Father had warned the couple not to eat from the tree of knowledge. [...] The snake as unobtrusive as it may seem has been successful with its subtle art of persuasion. The richly laiden tree of knowledge stands at the centre of the composition, the reposing stag and two partridges suffice to define the location as paradise rich in wildlife.

Conservation History

Date2003

before 2003 the panel was cleaned and the overpaint was removed. Above all this consisted of removing the leafy loincloths applied at some stage to both figures. An illustration of this state can be found in Friedländer, Rosenberg 1979, No. 431.
