St Anne holds the infant Christ on her lap, while the Virgin sits beside her and offers the child an apple. A bearded man (Joseph) stands at the right behind the Virgin; three men stand behind St Anne, because she was married three times.

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, various brushes; possibly over an initial rough design executed with a stylus

Type/Ductus:

- detailed and freehand underdrawing after a pre-existing design

- thin to broader lines

- incised lines in the ground mark the boarders of the gilded areas

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines define the main contours, describe essential details and the facial features; volume is indicated with arched strokes; occasional linear definition of shadows

Deviations:

- corrections were made to forms during the painting process; only minor changes
