Underdrawing

DESCRIPTION

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brushes of varying widths; possibly over an initial design executed with a stylus

Type/Ductus:

- very detailed, freehand underdrawing after a pre-existing design

- thin (predominantly in the faces) to broader lines

- occasional hatching strokes and washes

- incised lines in the ground mark the boarders of the gilded areas

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines define the main contours, describe essential details and facial features; occasionally shadows are indicated with hatching strokes; volume is represented with washes

Deviations:

- corrections were made to forms during the painting process; only minor changes

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- a member of the Cranach workshop
