Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brush; possibly over an initial design executed with a stylus

Type/Ductus:

- relatively detailed, freehand underdrawing after a pre-existing design

- thin (predominantly in the face) to somewhat broader lines

- occasional hatching strokes

- incised lines in the ground mark the boaders of the gilded areas

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines define the main contours, describe essential details and facial features; volume is occasionally represented with hatching strokes

Deviations:

- corrections were made to forms during the painting process; only minor changes

INTERPRETATION

Attribution:

- a member of the Cranach workshop
