On Walpurgis 1512 Lucas Cranach pays the communal taxes (summer and winter levy of 27 and 50 groschens respectively) for two houses on the Market Square and fees (6 groschens and 10 pfennigs) for the first time. He receives a tax reduction of 6 groschens and 10 pfennigs. He pays 20 groschens for each house for the tax levied for the construction of the fortification around the city, and is given a tax exemption of 20 groschens for one house. A further fee of 10 groschens per house is due to support Schlieben (a town east of Wittenberg) - Cranach is given a tax-exemption here of 10 groschen. He buys a large quantity of building material (65 wagons of lime, 17,500 bricks).

Comments

For the first time Lucas Cranach is recorded in the tax list as the owner of two properties. According to recent research these objects are two houses on the Market Square that can be identified today as Markt 4 and 5 (see Hennen 2015 B, p. 315). However, the fact that the finance department's account books for 1511 were lost must also be considered. See also Straube 1985, among others p. 153, Fn. 42 with some erroneous details, which for many years resulted in incorrect conclusions.
A 'Meister Lucas' appears on the list of revenues for building material. The tax lists were checked to establish whether another 'Meister Lucas' was held liable in 1512. Besides Lucas Cranach a Lucas Petzch, who evidently died (on Michaelmas Petzch paid the outstanding tax) and a gardener called Lucas Kühne paid communal taxes. A 'Meister Lucas' with extensive building projects can only refer to Lucas Cranach. In the following years the name 'Meister Lucas' is no longer used.
In Wittenberg the currency denomination of 'Schock' is already calculated in 'neue Schock' = 60 pieces, here 60 groschens per Schock.
