In 1528 war tax (or so-called 'Türkensteuer') was levied on real estate. The citizens were to provide the information for assessment themselves. The properties (houses, farmland and garden) are recorded in the appendix of the finance department's account book. Two months wages for 200 soldiers were to be paid from the taxes. For every schock silver groschen one silver groschen in tax was to be paid.

In 1528 the war tax (Türkensteuer) was levied as tax on property. The summary, including tax payments, is recorded from fol.138 in part 1 of the finance department¿s account book from 1528 (see also levied `Türkensteuer¿ from 19.03.1542).
The register is arranged according to boroughs: the 'Coswigviertel' [fol. 2r-12v], the 'Marktviertel' [13r-24v], the 'Judenstraßenviertel' [25r-36v] and the 'Elsterviertel' [37r-50v]. This is followed by a list of property outside the town: beyond the Elbtor [fol. 51r), the suburbs and gardens beyond the Coswiger Tor (fol. 52r-55r), the suburbs and gardens beyond the Elstertor (fol. 55v-58r) as well as others with gardens for which tax was paid to the council (fol. 59v-60v).
The tax register is by comparison a valuable source for the social topographical study of Wittenberg (see bibliography).
