Due to the frequency of violent incidents between citizens and the aristocratic students the Saxon elector had abolished the privilege for aristocratic students to carry a weapon befitting their rank accompanied by drastic threats of punishment. However, this has lead to further incidents in the town, because the citizens - Lucas Cranach and his apprentices are mentioned - like aristocrats carried weapons, but are not affected by the electoral order.
The letter from the aristocratic students of Wittenberg to the elector of Saxony and the University Directorate, dated Wittenberg, the Saturday after St Margaret's Day, 1520 [14th of July 1520, Bl. 2r-3r] contains a list of aristocrats from Denmark, Franken and Saxony who as students were assaulted and abused by the menials of the municipal judge.

Comments

The title of the record suggests that there was a considerable dispute between the students from the University of Wittenberg and Lucas Cranach the Elder and his assistants. However the painter and his assistants are only mentioned three times in the documents contained in this record and only play a minor role as an example in the conflict between the students and the town of Wittenberg.
