Ich, Lucas Crannach zu Wittenberck, mit dieser meiner hantgeschrift beken, das mir dye geschickten des rats zu der Neustat an der Orlaw von wegen irs gotshaus funffczig f[loren] reinisch zu Leipczig im herbstmarck anno im alften [1511] iar vor auf die arwet, die sie mir einer tafel halben an gedingt, entricht haben.

Comments

In 2013 there was conference dedicated to the Neustadt Altarpiece. Alexander Krünes studied the available sources in the church archive Neustadt/Orla within this context (see Krünes 2015, 301-312). The material was also published earlier in a more extensive form (Krünes 2013, 445-476).
The original invoice was supposedly lost during the war and Scheidig doubts the authenticity of the copy. Schade refers to catalogue entries from an auction at Stargardt, Marburg 28-29.05.1963, No. 563 and 24-25.11.1964, No. 570. The original had the inventory number ThHStAW, Reg. B. 31904, Bl. 48a. The origin of the copy now in the file is not documented. However the handwriting can be attributed to Cranach.
