This oval painting, which was probably adapted from a rectangular format, shows the three-quarter length figure of St Catherine, standing against a dark background. Her attire reflects the contemporary fashion at the court of Saxony with her rich scarlet dress, the massive-linked chain and neckband set with precious stones and bearing a crucifix pendant. A delicate gold crown sits on her head and her hair hangs down loose over her shoulders. She holds the sword of her martyrdom in her right hand.
