The panel shows a frontal view of the risen Christ, standing at the centre of the composition on a stone slab in front of the entrance to his open tomb. In his left hand he holds the victory banner attached to a staff with a cross, and his right hand

The panel shows a frontal view of the risen Christ, standing at the centre of the composition on a stone slab in front of the entrance to his open tomb. In his left hand he holds the victory banner attached to a staff with a cross, and his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. He is wearing a red cloak with an ornate fastening. Three watchmen in armour sleep in a semi-circle at his feet. The three Marys are visible as tiny figures entering the composition from the right. In the background there is a landscape with a city, possibly Jerusalem, and behind this the sun rises - a metaphor for the resurrection.
