With reference to Østby 1973 Haverkamp, Exhib. Cat. Oslo 1998, 304 draws attention to the fact that a depiction of the Virgin (dated '1518') from the Glogau Cathedral (FR88), which has been missing since the Second World War, served as the model for the panel in Oslo.

  • the reverse of the panel has been smoothened, lime not beech wood, oak wood cradle

  • two horizontally aligned planks, the lower one exhibits numerous knots and woodworm channels

  • areas of the blue sky have a grey underpaint

  • small pentimento in the right hand of the Virgin

  • the white material employed to fill the knot-holes in the lower half of the panel is visible in the x-radiograph

  • fibres can also be identified there

  • written by Gunnar Heydenreich

  • heavy oak cradle

  • the grain is running in horizontal direction

  • no visible joints in the panel, neither on the panel itself nor in the x-radiograph, which might mean that the support consists of one single board or that the joints are obscured by the cradle

  • the x-radiograph indicates some limited use of fibers in or underneath the ground
