This fragmentary image shows the Virgin seated against a dark and neutral background gently supporting the infant Christ on her lap. She is wearing a red dress with a black neckline under a blue cloak with a green lining. The infant is naked and holds a fig in his left hand. This unusual symbol possibly alludes to his crucifixion and his third-day resurrection. Both the classical triangular composition and the traditional palette lend the image a certain gravitas.

Research History / Discussion

This panel seems to draw on Italian prototypes and can be associated with many of Cranach’s representations of the Virgin from the first decades of the 16th century.
