The portrait, which belongs to the civic portrait-type, depicts a 38 year old man as a half-length figure, turned slightly to the left. The gesture with which he holds his cloak is a sign of self-confidence.

Research History / Discussion

The way the sitter holds his cloak is often repeated in portraits by Lucas Cranach the Younger. Although the painting technique in the dark background resembles that of his father, the delicate modelling of the face and the individualized expression are characteristic of portraits by Cranach the Younger. In Musée des Beaux-Arts in Reims there is a very similar portrait (Inv. no. 795.1.276)
