Christ sits at the left edge of the painting at the head of a rectangular table around which the apostles have gathered for the last supper. St John rests his head on Christ's chest in mourning, while the latter gives Judas the bread to eat. Judas and two apostles sit on a bench that separates the event from the viewer. A tub containing water for cooling drinks is the only object represented on the tiled floor of the viewer's side of the barrier.
