The painting has a classic triangular composition with the Virgin and Child at the apex, St Catherine on the left and Joseph, slightly averted and asleep on the right. At the top two putti hold a crown over the Virgin's head. The artist has staged this tightly packed group of figures against the backdrop of a landscape. The background is made up of a castle on a rocky outcrop, a tree trunk and some branches of a large spruce tree as well as a radiant sky.
