The infant Christ stands on a balustrade at the bottom edge of the painting and is held in both hands by the Virgin. In the background there is an expansive landscape that is almost completely hidden by a large curtain held by two angels.

DESCRIPTIOM

Tools/Material:

- fluid, black medium, brush

Type/Ductus:

- freehand underdrawing

- thin to thicker lines, often very short, arch-shaped strokes; the finger and toe nails are represented

-occasional hatching-strokes (the Virgin's sleeves)

Function:

- relatively binding for the final painted version; the lines delineate the main contours, desribe essential details within forms and define the facial features; very occasional representation of volume with hatching-strokes

Deviations:

- minor adjeustments were made to forms during the painting process; small changes

- horizontally aligned and butt-joined

- the panel has been thinned and cradled

Condition Reports

  • good condition, the support is stable with some local woodworm damage

  • the glazes on the flesh paint in the areas of shadow are slightly thinned

  • along the join in the upper section of the Virgin's robe and Christ's flesh paint some overpaint

  • the green glazes have become brown and have been thinned

  • drying cracks in the red robe

  • a fine network of cracks (particularly in the flesh paint) is overlayed by a more coarse network in areas exhibiting a higher medium ratio (red and green)

  • examined by Gunnar Heydenreich
