There are a number of old inscriptions, of varying dates, on the verso of the panel: - at the top in dark paint: 'Sophie Viarberg[?] // [of?] Sax', and in a later hand underneath, in black ink: 'geb. pr. Von Waldeck' ('born Princess von Waldeck').
