The painting depicts the encounter between Jesus and the adulteress, an event frequently represented by Cranach and his workshop. Jesus is at the centre of the composition, dressed in a blue undergarment and a red cloak. He holds the sinner's wrist in his left hand and points towards her with his right hand. The woman appears to have half closed her eyes and her head is slightly inclined but directed to the viewer. She wears a red dress with the lacing open to reveal her breasts and she is being gently restrained by two men. Another soldier on the left-hand side of the image holds a basket of stones at the ready. Further scribes and Pharisees have gathered around the central figures of adulteress and Jesus. The whole group is set against a dark background.
