The panel shows a bearded man with a hooked nose under an arch, facing to the left. A building with a tower and arched entrance is visible in the background above his proper left shoulder. The panel appears to be a fragment of a larger composition.

recovered by the Allied Forces on 15 October 1945 and sent to the Munich Central Collecting Point (inv. no. 9479, as South German, manner of Schauffelein)
given over to the Austrian Government Kremsmünster depot (inv. no. K1366) on 25 April 1946
restituted to David Goldmann
thence by descent to the present owner

Underdrawing

The infrared refectogram shows:

- changes made to the position of the man's pupil, which was originally looking to the right

- a thin underdrawing probably executed with black chalk

Paint Layers and Gilding

Using non-invasive methods of examination azurite could be found in the sky and the man's sleeve, where it is mixed with lead white
