This panel depicts the subject of Lot and his Daughters from the Old Testament with great realism (Genesis 19, 23-38). In contrast to earlier late gothic representations the three protagonists are shown as half length figures and are positioned close to the picture plane. The artist has rendered the richness of their clothing, the jewelry as well as their physiognomies with great attention to detail. Lot, the old man with a grey beard, has lowered his head and already appears drowsy from the wine given to him by his daughters. There is a rocky outcrop behind the figures, but on the right-hand side the background opens out to show the flames of the burning city of Sodom and the white pillar of salt representing Lot’s wife.

Research History / Discussion

In a brief expertise Ludwig Meyer, Archiv für Kunstgeschichte, Munich observes that Cranach the Younger was head of the workshop from 1537 and trained many painters who later became independent masters. He attributes this work to an as yet anonymous pupil from the Cranach workshop.
