Christ on the cross is positioned at the centre of this multi-figured composition and is flanked on either side by the two thieves; Mary Magdalene kneels at the foot of the cross; at the left is the Virgin supported by St John and at the right the converted centurion.

Research History / Discussion

In 1974 D. Koepplin viewed the panel. According to his evaluation there are many factors, which do not support an attribution to the Cranach workshop e. g. the clouds in the sky and Mary Magdalene’s robe. However he did express his appreciation of the individual character of the work, which is not a weak imitation.
