Johann Friedrich of Saxony is depicted here as prince-elector in three quarter profile facing to his left. His outfit is particularly ornate: a white garment with a richly decorated collar under a robe of sumptuous cloth is complemented by his fur-trimmed cloak. His hands are folded and he wears a ring on the index finger of his left hand. The background directly behind him is dark, but a window on the the right hand side of the image reveals an expansive landscape.

This painting is very similar to a portrait now in Weimar [DE_KSW_G11]. There are slight deviations in the composition - most obvious is the inclusion in this painting of a window with a view of a landscape -, but the dimensions of both panels are the same.
