This panel shows a half-length portrait of Johann Friedrich against a neutral grey background and facing to his right. He is wearing a fur-trimmed cloak over a black tunic and a white shirt that is just visible at the collar. His outfit is completed by a black beret enlivened with decorative red beads. A scar on his face bears witness to the injury he incurred at the Battle of Mühlberg and on the index finger of his left hand he wears two rings.

Research History / Discussion

This portrait of Johann Friedrich I appears to have been executed after elector’s death in 1554. Created about 1578 it may draw on a printed prototype. A similar portrait of Johann Friedrich from the same period exists in Weißenfels castle in Saxony.
