This representation of the lamentation shows a group of figures huddled around Christ’s limp corpse in the foreground. Mary Magdalene kneels in front of the dead Christ wearing a contemporary velvet dress and holding up his arms. St John is shown behind kneeling and supporting his torso. The three Marys are also present, pictured mourning the loss. The scene is set in a landscape with a dramatic threatening sky and the three crosses on the hill of Calvary are visible at the left in the background. A single leafy tree occupies the centre of the composition. The ointment jar and the crown of thorns have been positioned prominently in the foreground.
