This small-scale copper panel shows a half-length portrait of Joachim Morlinus, Bishop of Wittenberg, against a neutral background with his gaze fixed on the viewer. He is wearing a black gown with a white ruffed shirt beneath. His greyish hair has thinned at the top, in contrast his beard is dark and full. He holds an edition of the bible [?] in his right hand, while pointing to it with the index finger of his left hand. An inscription above the sitter’s head reveals his identity and his age.

Research History / Discussion

Joachim Mörlin was born on the 08.05.1514 in Wittenberg and died on the 29.05.1571 in Königsberg. He was 57 years of age when he died – as is stated on the painting. Koepplin assumes that this painting is a copy after an original version created by Lucas Cranach the Younger in 1571 and serves therefore as an imporrtant document.
