The scene depicts Christ's encounter with the Samaritan woman described in the fourth chapter of the Gospel of St John. Christ is shown sitting on the left edge of Jacob’s well, which is rectangular and positioned at the centre of the composition. He is in conversation with the Samaritan woman who draws water from the well. Her jug is standing prominently on a stone in the foreground. In the background two towns with contemporary German architecture are schematically represented. A group of bearded men huddle together in a clearing at the right, possibly the disciples.
