Christ and Pilate are shown standing at the top of stairs at the left and appear to be involved in a deep discussion with a bearded man in the foreground, wearing a long blue cape over a yellow robe. Christ is represented with the crown of thorns on his head and covered in blood. He is clad only in a loincloth and a red cloak. The woman behind him pulls back this cloak to reveal his wounds, while further bearded gentleman observes events from behind with little compassion. At the right the stage-like architectural setting ends to reveal a small strip of mountainous landscape, a solitary tree and a distant town. A crowd of angry Jews and soldiers spills into the pictorial space from this direction.

Research History / Discussion

'The present composition is based on Albrecht Dürer's woodcut Ecce Homo of circa 1498 and was possibly part of a series of altarpieces produced between 1520 and 1525 for the Stiftskirche in Halle, which included scenes from the Passion and were painted after designs by Lucas Cranach the Elder.'
