The Virgin is shown seated on a stone block in the foreground at the centre of the image. She holds the infant Christ on her lap, while he eats strawberries from a plant offered to him by a cherub. The scene is set in a landscape with a church and a fortress on a rocky outcrop visible in the far distance. A tree is positioned slightly off centre in the middle ground behind a dark curtain, which is held up by four cherubs and shields the figurative group.
