Set against a dark background free from distracting landscape elements, the three figures in this painting are positioned close to the picture plane, fostering a more direct engagement with the viewer. This is underscored by the half-length seated figure of the Virgin who looks out at the viewer with her head inclined to the left. Her long blond hair is covered only by a transparent veil, the edge of which draws a fine line above her eyes. She gently supports the naked infant Christ, who stands on her knee and reaches forward to grasp the grapes offered to him by the infant St John.
