Werner Schade considers this fragment to be a work by a bergamasco or northern Italian artist

This woman appears without a chain among a group of figures in a work attributed to Bartolomeo Veneto (Sotheby's New York, 20.05.1993, Lot 12). At the left and right of the woman elements of the men depicted by Veneto are also visible on the present painting. It would seem that this now fragmentary painting was the protoype for the painting auctioned in New York or vice versa.
