The painting depicts a half-length portrait of the humanist and theologian Philipp Melanchthon (1497-1560) in three quarter profile, against a greenish grey background. He is wearing a fur-trimmed cloak over a bright red doublet under which a white shirt with a ruffled collar is visible at the neck. The sitter is facing to his right and holds a leather bound book in his hands. He rests his left arm on a parapet in front of him, that bears an inscription.
