The fragment would have originally shown a full-length depiction of the Man of Sorrows, crowned with thorns against a dark background, but at some stage the format was cropped to just below Christ’s waist. He appears hunched together, his body exhibiting the wounds inflicted on him, but nevertheless he inclines

The fragment would have originally shown a full-length depiction of the Man of Sorrows, crowned with thorns against a dark background, but at some stage the format was cropped to just below Christ’s waist. He appears hunched together, his body exhibiting the wounds inflicted on him, but nevertheless he inclines his head to his right to catch the spectator’s gaze. He is flanked on either side by a cherub, holding the instruments of his martyrdom.
