He appears hunched together, his body exhibiting the wounds inflicted on him, but nevertheless he inclines his head to his right to catch the spectator’s gaze. He is flanked on either side by a cherub, holding the instruments of his martyrdom.

    [1] Henckel von Donnersmarck was born at Lentschau in 1481 and died at Breslau in 1539. A doctor of jurisprudence and priest in Kaschau, in 1522 he was appointed Court Chaplain to King Louis II of Hungary and from 1526-30 to the Dowager Queen Maria (according to a letter written by Mr. Victor Franco de Beaux to the present owner, dated 9 March 1993).
