The painting depicts the popular subject of the ‘Ill-matched Pair’. However here unlike many other versions it is not the large age gap between the figures that is addressed by the image. Instead like a version in Darmstadt [DE_HLMD_GK793] the emphasis is placed on the social difference between the farmer

The painting depicts the popular subject of the ‘Ill-matched Pair’. However here unlike many other versions it is not the large age gap between the figures that is addressed by the image. Instead like a version in Darmstadt [DE_HLMD_GK793] the emphasis is placed on the social difference between the farmer and the girl dressed in courtly attire. She is shown holding her hands out in expectation to receive the money he pulls from his purse.
