The subject, the pairing of a foolish old man and a youthful beauty was very popular in sixteenth-century art, affording as it did the opportunity to present a lascivious image under the guise of a morality lesson. This painting depicts a toothless old man holding a young girl in his arms. He is oblivious to the fact that she attempts to steal his purse. The young woman, who is shown looking at the viewer, wears a red dress and precious jewellery. This version is probably an early copy after a version now in the fränkische Galerie, Kronach [DE_BStGS-FGK_1465].

Paint Layers and Gilding

Results of samples taken from the paint layers:

Sample 1:

Site: yellow from the woman's neckband

Pigments: lead tin yellow

Sample 2:

Site: black background

Pigments: soot, small amount of lead white

Identified pigments: lead white, lead tin yellow, pigments containing iron oxide (ochre, umber), vermilion, coloured lakes, azurite, charcoal and bone black as well as soot.

The pigments correspond with the palette employed in the 16th century and suggest that the panel was not produced in the 19th or 20th century.
