A portrait of Martin Luther shown as a half-length figure in three quarter profile, facing to his left against a pale blue background. He is wearing a black academic gown and a beret of the same colour. In his hands he holds a small leather-bound book. Various examples of this composition were painted in Cranach’s workshop, often with only minor differences. This painting includes a Latin inscription from Isaiah 30, 15, written in yellow: ‘In silentio et spe erit fortitvdo ‘ (in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength).
