The panel shows St Dorothy (l.) and St Margaret (r.) as full-length figures in contemporary Renaissance courtly attire. A small boy, wearing only in a gauzy tunic stands between them and offers St Dorothy a basket of flowers – an attribute associated with her. St Margaret’s dragon is positioned happily at her feet, while a less common vanitas symbol, that of the mask is placed prominently on the ground in the foreground. The figurative group is set against the backdrop of an expansive mountainous landscape with a town visible in the valley and a fortress on a hill to the right.

Research History / Discussion

In 1937 [Exhib. Cat. Leipzig 1937, no. 12] this work was first associated with another panel depicting 'The Last Judgement' on the recto and St Elizabeth and Mary Magdalene on the verso, now in the Coburg collection [DE_KSVC_M037], and more recently in 2018 by Weschenfelder in [Cat. Coburg 2018, 73 ff.] While recognising the difference in the excution of both panels he underlines the stylistic parallels and moreover their similar dimensions.
