The Virgin is shown seated at the centre of the image on a wooden beam framing the edge of a grass verge. She holds the infant Christ on her lap, who takes a berry offered to him by a cherub. A further three cherubs are busy collecting berries in the foreground, a forth stands at the Virgin's left, and together with another two cherubs he holds a dark curtain that serves as a backdrop for the figurative group. A mountainous landscape with both a fortress and a town is visible in the far distance.

Several variants of this composition are known today and variously attributed to Lucas Cranach the Elder, his workshop or his son. Examples range from [DE_SAOH_1997-3b] and [PRIVATE_NONE-P039] to slightly larger formats like [PRIVATE_NONE-P412] or a further almost identical, but slightly larger version of the present painting [PRIVATE_NONE-P483].
