The painting depicts the popular subject of the ‘Ill-matched Pair’. The pairing of a foolish old man and a youthful beauty was very popular in sixteenth-century art, affording as it did the opportunity to present a lascivious image under the guise of a morality lesson. In this version of the subject the pair appear to reciprocate a gentle embrace, but a closer inspection reveals another meaning. The old man directs his gaze towards the young girl and offers her a gold coin, while she looks out at the viewer with a knowing glance and puts her hand in his purse.
