Research History / Discussion

The representation of the saints is quite similar in style to four female saints on wing panels of an altarpiece now held in the Bavarian State Collection (Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen); particularly the figures of Sts Agnes and Barbara [DE_BStGS_13223].

[Christie's online database, accessed 07.06.2021] [no longer online, 05.08.2021]

The saints may originally have been conceived as full-length figures and the panel which may have served as the wing panel of an altarpiece could have been cropped at some stage. Further examination of the panel could shed light on this hypothesis.
