According to the legend Lucretia was raped by the son of the Roman king whereupon she committed suicide. The event led to the fall of the Royal house and the foundation of the Roman Republic.

The heroine is shown here as a half-length figure against a dark background. Besides a thin transparent undergarment she is wearing a fur-trimmed cloak, that has slipped from her left shoulder. A similarly transparent veil covers her elegantly pinned up hair and her attire is completed with jewellery, consisting of a choker set with precious stones and a delicate linked chain. In her right hand she holds the dagger pointed towards her chest.

Research History / Discussion

A copy of this version signed with the initials ‘LN ‘ was offered at Sotheby’s New York in 2017, lot 2 [PRIVATE_NONE-P518].

The painting was evidently in Berlin in 1937 when the Cranach exhibition was held there. It is however probably not the same paiting as the Lucretia listed in the catalogue [Exhib. Cat. Berlin 1937, no. 85, 63 x 50 cm, Kassel, Dr Ing. e. h. C. Beil].
