Research History / Discussion

On examination of the panel in 2001 Jacoby was not able to find evidence to support the theory that the painting was cropped [Jacoby 2002, 210]. However, a fragment depicting the head of St John the Baptist [PRIVATE_NONE-P298] does exist and is c. 2 cm wider than this fragment. If not only the lower edge, but also the other threes edges were trimmed by about 1 cm, the reduction in size would not be so obvious.

A photomontage shows how perfectly the two fragments fit together. A comparative examination of the reverse of the panels is pending.
