Christ is shown at the centre of the image, kneeling in front of a rocky outcrop in the garden of Gethsemane while awaiting the agony of the Passion. With his hands clasped in an attitude of prayer he looks up to a cloud filled with heavenly light and surrounded by cherubs’ heads. This composition is a subject returned to on several occasions by the Cranach workshop. However, here the sleeping disciples are omitted to focus on the figure of Christ.
