This devotional image in the tradition of a vera icon, depicting the head of Christ with the crown of thorns against a black background, was conceived to be viewed close-up. Christ fixes his gaze on the viewer and the feature of his slightly open mouth is unusually intimate. The upper third of the pictorial space is occupied by the crown of thorns – symbolic of his sufferance.

Research History / Discussion

The painting appears to be a copy after a version by Cranach the Elder now in a private collection [PRIVATE_NONE-P169].

[cda 2022]

A technical examination carried out in Cologne to assess the validity of a tentative attribution to Jacopo de Barbari showed that although this painting may have been created in the 16th century the technique is quite different from other paintings more firmly attribute to the artist.
